Homeowner Tip #4

Why Does My Toilet Keep Running Back Into the Bowl?

Do the tissue paper test
Take a small piece of dry toilet tissue and place it against the back of the toilet bowl. Don't flush. If the tissue keeps getting wet, you've got water passing into the bowl — even if you can't actually see it running.

A toilet can quietly run water into the bowl 24 hours a day and it can be surprisingly difficult to spot. Sometimes people don't notice until they get a high-water-usage letter — or scale starts forming where the water has been continually running.

What's causing it?

There are normally only two reasons. Either the flush valve seal or washer isn't holding properly, so water leaks out of the cistern and the fill valve keeps topping it back up, or the fill valve isn't shutting off properly because it's worn, sticking or scaled up.

Had a letter from Thames Water about unusually high water usage?
Check your toilets first. A small constant trickle can be easy to miss because the water disappears straight into the bowl.
